Mastopexy is a popular alternative to breast-enhancement surgery.

A cosmetic surgical procedure that allows women to improve the shape and appearance of the breasts, mastopexy is a popular alternative to breast-enhancement surgery. Special care is required when recovering from mastopexy.

  1. Surgical Site Care

    • Surgical wounds require gentle care after mastopexy. These areas should be kept clean and dry at all times in order to avoid infection or a slow process of healing.

    Discomfort

    • Swelling, bruising and pain in the breasts is normal following mastopexy. Numbness is commonly experienced, as well as a reduction in nipple sensitivity. Prescription pain medications are typically prescribed following the procedure.

    Physical Activity

    • Avoid heavy lifting for at least two weeks following mastopexy surgery. Strenuous physical activity and exercise routines should be performed with caution.

    Postoperative Care

    • A compression garment should be worn as advised by a surgeon following breast-lift surgery. Antibiotics may be provided to avoid infection. The upper body should be elevated during sleep to prevent the buildup of fluids.

    Complications

    • Signs of complications following mastopexy include warm sensation in the surgical site, fever, chills, dizziness, bleeding, uneven swelling and redness, odor or discharge from the surgical site. If any of these symptoms are experienced, seek immediate medical help.
