The Maltese is a small but lively dog. These outgoing canines are characterized by long, thick, white fur. The Maltese breed is hardy, but possesses a disposition for several diseases, including one that causes seizures.

  1. Identification

    • Maltese puppies have a natural genetic predisposition toward a disease known as "White Dog Shaker Syndrome." This disease causes seizures and primarily affects Maltese, Bichon Frise and West Highland White Terrier dogs.

    Speculation

    • The exact cause of White Dog Shaker Syndrome is unknown. It is theorized that the tremors and eye movements associated with White Dog Shaker Syndrome are caused by an autoimmune reaction that triggers a defect in the dog's neurotransmitters.

    Effects

    • White Dog Shaker Syndrome manifests as seizures. Full body tremors, rapid eye movements and unconsciousness are all seen in the seizures associated with White Dog Shaker Syndrome.

    Considerations

    • White Dog Shaker Syndrome typically manifests in Maltese dogs between 3 to 5 years of age. Seizures are usually controlled with sedative medications such as diazepam.

    Other Causes

    • Maltese dogs are subject to seizures from other sources, as well. Seizures associated with the overdose of medications, flea control products, and toxic houseplants are all possible. These seizures are not inherent to Maltese dogs, but are caused by environmental factors.

    Warning

    • If you suspect your Maltese dog suffers from White Dog Shaker Syndrome or is experiencing an environmentally caused seizure, seek emergency veterinary help immediately.
