Electrolyte Imbalance Description

Electrolyte Imbalance Description thumbnail
Runners attempt to keep electrolyte levels in balance.

Runners and athletes maintain electrolyte balances during exercise to maximize performance. During the competition, however, electrolyte imbalances may occur that can decrease performance levels.

  1. Process

    • Electrolyte imbalances can occur as an athlete sweats during exercise and electrolytes are used for vital bodily functions.

    Types

    • Different types of electrolytes include sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium and phosphate.

    Symptoms

    • Negative side effects of electrolyte imbalances include headaches, nausea, muscle twitching and cramping, and disorientation.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Electrolyte levels can be replaced by drinking coconut water or electrolyte drinks such as Gatorade or Powerade or electrolyte replacement products such as Nuun. Foods high in potassium or sodium can also be consumed to replace electrolytes.

    Significance

    • Proper electrolyte balances will prolong athletic activity by allowing muscles to function properly.
