What Is a Fisher Fur Jacket?
A fisher fur jacket is a short coat made from pelts of the fisher, a small mammal and member of the weasel family. Fisher pelts are considered top-quality furs.

Physical Characteristics
-
A fisher weighs between 5 and 12 pounds and can be up to 3 ½ feet long. It has a long lean body like the mink, otter and marten, other members of the weasel family. Their long tails account for almost a third of their body length. They have very thick soft brown coats.
Geographic Range
-
Fishers are only found in North America. Loss of habitat and over-trapping decreased the fisher's range and they were almost eliminated by the 1930s. Oregon, Montana, Idaho and Alberta have successfully reintroduced fishers.

Fisher Diet
-
Fishers are primarily carnivores that prey on herbivores. They eat mice, squirrels, birds, shrews, snowshoe hares, some beavers, insects, fruit and berries. Fishers are popular with loggers because they prey on porcupines that damage commercial timber.
Nesting
-
Fishers are solitary except during breeding and denning seasons. They don't hibernate and spend lots of their time foraging and resting in trees. They are the fastest animals in trees. They use resting sites like logs stumps, brush piles, holes in the grounds and nests of branches all year. During the winter they used snow dens, burrows under the snow with long narrow tunnels leading into them.
Fun Facts
-
Fishers are nocturnal. Fishers avoid open fields and other non-forested areas. They are agile swimmers.
