Job Description of a Mechanical Fitter

Job Description of a Mechanical Fitter thumbnail
Mechanical fitters must be skilled welders.

For the mechanically inclined, a job as a mechanical fitter can be a great fit. The hands-on, sometimes dirty work appeals to people who like tinkering, fixing, problem solving and creating.

  1. Primary Functions

    • A mechanical fitter, during machinery and equipment production, assembles/fits parts made up of metal and other materials via brazing and welding. He might work with plumbing, electrical, hydraulic or pneumatic pipes and lines. Dismantling fused parts is also part of his job.

    Secondary Functions

    • The fitter sets up, adjusts and inspects metalworking and pipe working machines and equipment. She maintains her tools and equipment to ensure safe and efficient operations. After reviewing drawings, specifications and job sites, she determines what materials and equipment are needed for a given job.

    Work Environment

    • The workshops and production areas a mechanical fitter labors in are often loud, hot and dusty. He spends most of his day on his feet, and he needs to be in good physical shape. Protective equipment, such as earmuffs and goggles, must be worn given the environment.

    Requirements

    • Fitters should enjoy technical work and possess excellent hand-eye coordination. This is a skilled trade, so graduation from a trade school or successful completion of an apprenticeship is recommended. A high school diploma or equivalent is required.

    Pay

    • Indeed.com indicates the average salary for a mechanical fitter, as of February 2010, was $33,000.
