Soil Requirements for English Hardy Ivy

English hardy ivy, a climbing vine and ground cover, is a moderate- to quick-growing plant under the proper conditions. This attractive evergreen is popular because of its longevity and need for little or no care once established. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Soil Types

    • English hardy ivy prefers a loamy soil that is rich and somewhat acidic; however, it is able to tolerate a variety of soils.

    pH

    • Alkaline soils, those with a pH above 7.0, will cause English hardy ivy to grow poorly and should have peat moss or other organic matter added.

    Water

    • Soggy or constantly wet conditions will greatly slow the growth of English hardy ivy. It prefers evenly moist soil and is somewhat drought tolerant.

    Geography

    • English hardy ivy is considered a hardy plant outdoors in USDA zones 5 through 9.

    Warning

    • While English hardy ivy makes an attractive ground cover and vine, it can be aggressive and take over where not wanted.
