What to Expect After GreenLight Laser Surgery

GreenLight laser surgery treats benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH, also known as enlarged prostate. This minimally invasive surgical procedure gets rid of the excess prostate tissue that causes symptoms of BPH.

  1. Procedure

    • This outpatient procedure allows you to go home the same day. It typically takes about an hour, according to the Fremont Medical Center of Fremont, Nebraska.

    Symptom Relief

    • According to the Associated Urologists of Orange County, California, you will experience immediate improvement of symptoms, including better urine flow and bladder emptying.

    Recovery

    • You will start to feel better in a few days, with full recovery taking several weeks. You might see blood in the urine during the healing process, but this is normal, according to the urology center. Catheters are sometimes necessary for 24 hours after surgery.

    Ejaculation

    • You might ejaculate less fluid because of this procedure, but the change is not as significant as with other BPH procedures.

    Long-Term

    • According to the urology center, studies indicate this procedure continues to produce symptom relief for at least five years.
