What Is a Maxillofacial Prosthetic Device?

A maxillofacial prosthetic device is a product designed to repair injuries and congenital (birth) defects of the face, jaw and hard and soft palates.

Significance

According to the Dental School at the UT Health Science Center San Antonio, maxillofacial prosthetics may be required to restore everyday functions such as chewing and speaking, as well as to meet cosmetic and social needs and protect areas of the face during radiation therapy procedures.

Facial Prosthetics

Medical-grade silicone rubber may be used to create facial prosthetics such as ears, eyes or noses, according to the American Academy of Maxillofacial Prosthetics. Typically, manufacture of these devices requires a series of fittings to match them to an individual's facial characteristics.

Obturators

Prosthetic devices called obturators address holes and other defects in the hard or soft palate inside the mouth. They may also contain artificial teeth.

Mandibular Prosthetics

Mandibular prosthetics address defects of the jaw (mandible), floor of the mouth and tongue. These devices may also contain hard palate elements to improve contact between the palate and tongue.

Palatal Lift Prosthetics

Palatal lift prosthetics elevate the soft palate to maintain proper position when the mouth is closed.
