Sinus pressure and associated pain usually occur in patients after sinus surgery.

  1. Identification

    • While the types of pain experienced may also include tooth pain and eye sensitivity, the lingering pain is usually characterized as sinus pressure pain. According to the American Rhinologic Society, this pain is similar to sinus infection and sinus headache pain experienced by most patients prior to surgery.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Because most patients have sinus pressure pain following surgery, otolaryngologists (ear, nose and throat doctors) often prescribe pain medications and steroids (including nasal steroid sprays) to assist in the healing process and the reduction of pain.

    Time Frame

    • Sinus pressure pain can begin immediately after the anesthetic from the surgery wears off. According to Jackson Sinus, recovery time and the time frame in which headaches may appear varies considerably between patients due to the specific procedures performed during surgery and the patient's reaction to anesthesia.

    Considerations

    • Otolaryngologists warn against resuming work and normal tasks immediately due to the possibility of nosebleeds. However, patients should consider lingering sinus pressure pain and pain management following the surgical procedure.

    Warning

    • Persistent post-surgical headaches should be treated by a doctor. Patients should keep the doctor informed of worsening conditions. Follow-up appointments as scheduled for sinus surgery are essential for a positive surgical outcome.
