Foot tendon pain is usually caused by overuse of the foot. Runners, athletes and dancers are prone to these types of injuries, which can include strains, tears and inflammatory conditions like tendonitis. There are a number of tendons in the foot which can potentially be prone to pain. Most injuries can be treated without surgery.

Identification

One common type of foot tendon pain is Achilles heel tendonitis. This type of pain usually causes a dull ache or throbbing in the back of the heel. A person may experience pain when raising up on their toes or pushing off with their foot, according to the article "Achilles Tendonitis" at Mayoclinic.com. Swelling and stiffness can also be caused by Achilles tendonitis.

Peroneal Tendonitis

Peroneal tendonitis is often caused by running up slopes, which can cause the foot to roll out and aggravate the peroneal tendons. Peroneal tendonitis can easily be diagnosed because the pain occurs on the outside of the heel behind the ankle bone.

Tibialis Posterior Syndrome

Injuries or tendonitis that affect the tibialis posterior tendon will usually cause pain and inflammation behind or below the bony ankle bone. However, unlike peroneal tibial tendonitis, pain can often extend down under the foot.

Anterior Tibial Tendonitis

Injuries or inflammation in the anterior tibial tendon usually cause pain and swelling on top of the foot. These symptoms can also accompany shin splints, which is a painful condition that causes pressure and pain across the front of the shins. This injury will usually hurt when one walks down steps.

Considerations

A person can also injure additional extensor and flexor tendons, which move the toes toward or away from the body, respectively. People with foot tendon pain should see a doctor for a proper diagnosis and treatment options.
