Tonsillectomy Sinus Pain

A tonsillectomy is a medical procedure in which a patient's tonsils are surgically removed. Sinus headaches are a common type of pain that results from sinusitis or inflamed sinuses. Sinus pain is usually unrelated to a tonsillectomy.

    • According to the MayoClinic.com, tonsillectomies are performed to prevent tonsil infections, to treat swallowing or breathing problems caused by enlarged tonsils or to treat tonsils that bleed or are cancerous.

    Tonsillectomy Risks

    • Tonsillectomy patients may experience reactions to anesthesia used in the procedure, they may develop swelling or soreness of the tongue and they may experience bleeding during or after surgery. Throat pain and difficulty swallowing may occur after a tonsillectomy.

    • A surgeon cuts or burns the tonsils out of a patient's throat while the patient is under general anesthesia.

    • According to the MayoClinic.com, sinus inflammation and pain may be caused by colds, allergies or a bacterial infection. Fungal infections and structural problems in a person's nasal cavities can cause sinus pain.

    • People with asthma, nasal polyps or a weakened immune system have a greater risk of developing sinus pain.

    Sinus Pain Treatment

    • Doctors treat sinus pain caused by a bacterial infection with antibiotics. Over the counter pain relievers, saline nasal sprays and decongestants may improve pain symptoms.
