General Information on Cottage-Style Homes

Cottage-style homes became popular in the 1920s and are known for their asymmetrical style, lovely detailing and gabled roofs. Cottage style is also called Carpenter Gothic Revival and is similar to Tudor Revival style.

Gables

A distinct feature of cottage-style homes is gabled roofs. These sharply pointed peaks break up the roof line into multiple angles.

Ornate chimneys, elaborately paneled doors and decorative brickwork are some of the beautiful details that cottage-style home design incorporates.

Windows

Bay windows are commonly seen in cottage-style homes, and the main windows of the house are usually tall and narrow. Often the glass is divided into multiple square panes.

Roofing

Many different types of materials are used in roofing cottage-style homes, but one feature that is unique to cottage style is the false thatched roof. This roofing design imitates the thatched roofs of traditional English cottages.

Size

Cottage-style homes are cozy, typically not exceeding one-and-a-half stories although some are two-story homes.
