Suntan Oil Facts

Summertime is an opportunity to add color to your skin. Suntan oil will allow you to achieve that color more quickly than other products, but it will not protect your skin from the damaging effects of ultraviolet rays.

  1. Water-Resistant

    • Because water and oil do not mix, suntan oil is water-resistant. When you want to take a break from the sun and swim in the ocean or a pool; you won't have to reapply the oil.

    Moisturizer

    • Suntan oil not only helps with tanning but also works as a moisturizer. The suntan oil creates a layer over your skin, keeping the water from leaving your skin. Suntan oil's moisturizing ability comes from the fruit and vegetable oils it often contains, such as coconut oil and carrot oil.

    Oil vs. Lotion

    • If you burn easily, do not use suntan oil. Suntan lotion, which generally includes a sunscreen, would be better. Sunscreens are designated with various levels of sun protection factor (SPF). These levels can range from 1 to 100, with higher numbers signifying greater protection.

    Increased Sensitivity

    • Suntan oil makes your skin more sensitive to the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays---this is what helps you tan.

    Warnings

    • Although suntan oil can help you tan, you can also get seriously burned. Don't spend too much time in the sun when using suntan oil. Also, do not use suntan oil on children, as their skin is already sensitive to the sun's UV rays.
