Zometa infusions are given intravenously.

Patients with cancerous tumors may receive intravenous Zometa infusions, delivered by health care professionals in a clinical setting, usually once every three or four weeks, according to the Zometa website.

  1. Procedure

    • Before a Zometa infusion, blood tests are performed to ensure the safety of dosing. The infusion procedure takes at least 15 minutes, and the patient may go home when it's completed.

    Exercise

    • Exercise is not contraindicated for patients receiving Zometa infusions, its manufacturer says. Patients on long-term therapies should discuss exercise routines with their physician.

    Precautions

    • Patients on Zometa infusion therapy must be monitored to ensure they receive adequate hydration. Patients who exercise during the course of Zometa infusion treatment should be careful to maintain adequate fluid intake at all times, according to RxList.com.

    Side Effects

    • Zometa is a bisphosphonate, a category of drugs shown to cause severe pain in bones, joints, and/or muscles, RxList says. If pain occurs during exercise, patients should consult their physician before continuing.

    Additional Information

    • Patients on long-term Zometa infusion therapy usually need additional vitamin and mineral supplementation. According to RxList, a daily multivitamin with at least 400 international units of vitamin D, and at least 500 mg of calcium are recommended.
