Auto repair businesses must stock a variety of new or used parts to have on hand for fixing cars, trucks and other types of vehicles. Parts technicians are the individuals responsible for handling many of the duties that relate to these parts.

  1. Primary Function

    • Parts technicians order, unpack, label and organize all of the parts for an auto repair business. The technician monitors the levels of inventory to know when to re-order parts consistently kept in stock.

    Other Duties

    • Parts technicians typically perform different types of other duties for their employers, such as answering phones, calculating the cost of repairs, accepting payment from customers and keeping the lobby and office areas clean.

    Skills

    • Successful parts technicians possess enough physical strength to lift heavy boxes of parts, basic arithmetic and organizational skills. The ability to use inventory software, email and web browsers are also necessary as well.

    Education

    • Although there is no specific education required for the work of parts technicians, most employers prefer to hire applicants with a minimum of a high school diploma or GED.

    Compensation

    • As of 2008, the median salary earned by stock clerks like parts technicians was $20,800, according to the Occupational Information Network.
