Life Expectancy of Labradoodles

Although originally a cross between the Labrador Retriever and the Standard Poodle, Labradoodles are now a breed of their own and have a life expectancy of approximately 15 years.

  1. Origin

    • Wally Conron, the head breeder for the Australian Guide Dog Association, bred the very first Labradoodle in 1989.

    Description

    • Featuring a slightly heavier body than the Standard Poodle, the Labradoodle has muscular forelimbs and its muzzle is narrower than that of a Labrador Retriever. Labradoodle coats come in chalk, cream, apricot, chocolate, cafe, black and silver shades and the length ranges from 4 to 6 inches.

    Life Expectancy

    • The life expectancy of the Labradoodle is 13 to 15 years, as with most breeds of dogs, although exceptions do occur.

    Health Concerns

    • When looking at health concerns of Labradoodles, it is important to think of health concerns associated with Labrador Retrievers and Standard Poodles. Canine hip dysplasia, Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA), disorders of the elbow or patella and VonWillebrand's Disease are some health concerns of Labradoodles, according to The Dog Pages.

    Exercise

    • The Goldendoodle & Labradoodle Website states that Labradoodles require moderate exercise and generally have low maintenance coats, although they are social dogs and are thus happiest when around people.
