What Is the Meaning of a Green Awareness Ribbon?

Green ribbons aren't worn just for show. Whether to promote peace, music or the environment, people all over the world wear green ribbons to show their awareness for various causes.

Farm Families

The National Catholic Rural Life Conference began their "Green Ribbon Campaign" to show their support for farm families affected by low prices, disasters and negative aspects of The Freedom to Farm Act of 1996.

Environment

According to a June 2007 MIT News article, Massachusetts Institute of Technology students take "The Graduation Pledge of Social and Environmental Responsibility," and wear a green awareness ribbon to remind them of how their work impacts society and the environment.

Darfur

The Cohen Center for Holocaust Studies at Keene State College in New Hampshire urges students to take part in The Save Darfur Coalition's green awareness ribbon project to raise awareness for the deaths of innocent people killed in the Sudanese region of Darfur.

Medical

People wear green awareness ribbons to support medical-related issues like kidney cancer, Tourette's syndrome, and organ and tissue donors, according to MD Junction.

Music

In 2006, Heineken partnered with Latin rock band Ozomatli for the "Green Ribbon Initiative" to raise money for music education in Hispanic communities, according to the Hispanic PR Wire.
