Can Soap Damage Transition Lenses?

Transitions is a registered trademark of Transitions Optical Inc. for one brand of photochromic eyeglass lenses. All photochromic lenses on the market darken on exposure to ultraviolet radiation outdoors. Does this Spark an idea?

    Misconceptions

    • Many people think that soap may harm photochromic lenses. But, according to the Everett Clinic, mild soap, used properly, will not harm these lenses.

    Warning

    • Never clean or polish your Transitions lenses without some type of liquid (mild soapy water or lens cleaner). This will damage your lenses.

    Solution

    • If you clean your lenses with soap, optician John Ford of Silver Creek Optical recommends you dip your glasses into warm, soapy water and then rinse them under running water. Dry the lenses by patting gently with a lens cloth to remove the excess water.
