What Is a Fireproof Fabric?

No fabric can be totally fireproof, as anything will burn given a high enough temperature. However, it is possible to treat material and create a flame-resistant nature that will prevent it from igniting when exposed to flames. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Creating a Fire-Resistant Fabric

    • Creating a barrier against fire in fabric is possible by using different mixtures that may include ammonium polyphosphates, urea, polyphosphoric acid and an intumescent-based retardant.

    Effects on Fabric

    • Most manmade fabrics are composed of plastic components that fare well with a fire-resistant treatment. These treatments are non-corrosive, non-toxic, are not irritating to the skin and do not retain moisture in the fabric.

    Fiber Strength and Color

    • Treating fabrics with a fire-retardant process does not weaken the fibers of the material or cause any type of discoloration.

    Home Treatment

    • It is possible to treat your carpet and draperies with a fire-resistant spray that meets government specifications for safety. Material can also be dipped in this solution and air-dried.

    What to Look For

    • When shopping for fire-resistant fabric, look for the words "flame retardant" or "fire resistant" to know if your purchase has been treated and is safe against a fire. If these words are not stated, treat your fabric at home to be sure.
