What is Pumice?

Volcanic gases. Pumice, or pumice stone, is a form of volcanic glass permeated by natural-gas bubbles causing a spongy or porous surface that is abrasive. Pumice is usually light gray in color but can be found colorless.

Pumice-based concrete. Pumice is used in light construction in the form of concrete and concrete block. Pumice is also found in industrial cleaning abrasives and landscaping materials and is used in horticulture.

Pumice for skin care. Pumice is found in drug stores among the beauty items, its purpose is to remove calluses from feet and elbows. However, pumice is also found in household cleaning supplies and detergents. Pumice powder is added to detergent to fade blue jeans.

Volcanic fields. Pumice is found in volcanic fields and is in large supply. It is one of the few substances on the planet that is not in danger of becoming rare or extinct. More than 50 countries worldwide mine pumice.
Name

The name "pumice" originates from the Latin term "pumex" meaning foam. During Roman times pumice was mined near Naples, Italy in a field called Pozzuoli which provided the derivation pozzolan.
