EDGE technology boosts GSM cell phone data speeds.

We are in the midst of a technological revolution unlike any other. Booming mobile phone technology has created the need for faster, more efficient communication. The development of EDGE (Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution) technology has greatly increased the speed of data used mainly through mobile phone usage.

  1. GSM Technology

    • GSM (Global System for Mobile communication) technology is the worldwide leader in mobile phone systems. EDGE is an enhancement for the GSM networks. It was released in the USA in 2003 and allows for a faster data connection and performance.

    Speed

    • EDGE is a "3G" (third generation) technology. It is considered to work three to four times as efficiently as the prior GSM network standards of "2G" and "2.5G."

    Usage in Mobile Devices

    • EDGE allows the common cellular phone user to browse the Internet, watch videos and experience superior download speeds through their mobile device.

    EDGE Mobile Phones and Networks

    • EDGE technology works only through a mobile carrier that supports GSM networks. In order to use this technology one has to be in an area where the GSM/EDGE signal is received. Only phones that support EDGE (such as the iPhone by Apple) will have access to its benefits.

    Global Reception

    • EDGE has currently spread all over the world to over 170 different countries and has paved the way for new mobile communication technologies to come.
