Typical Boat Engine Life

There are two types of boat engine commonly used in commercial and pleasure craft: gasoline and diesel. Factors such as maintenance, use, storage and weather conditions all affect the life expectancy of a marine engine.

Gasoline Engines

The life of a boat engine is measured in hours. A well maintained gasoline boat engine should run for 1,500 hours before requiring a major overhaul.

Diesel Engines

Diesel engines have a longer life expectancy than their gasoline counterparts: they should run for an average of 5,000 hours before an overhaul is required.

Problems

Gasoline engines will begin to experience minor engine problems after around 1,000 hours. Diesel engines used only occasionally on pleasure craft can experience problems due to internal corrosion.

Use

Boat Safe reports that the average pleasure boat is used for around 200 hours every year. This means that a well-maintained diesel engine should last for the entire life of a boat.

Conditions

The harsh weather conditions experienced by the average boat reduce the life expectancy of its engine. In comparison, the average automobile engine can survive for almost 3000 running hours, double the life of the gasoline boat engine.
