What Are the Causes of Non Bacterial Epididymitis?

Epididymitis is a medical condition that causes inflammation of the epididymis, which is a coiled tube at the rear of each testicle that holds and transports sperm. This disease is often caused by a bacterial infection, but may develop from other causes.

  1. Amiodarone

    • According to the Mayo Clinic, patients who take an anti-arrhythmic heart medication called amiodarone may develop an inflamed epididymis.

    Urine Backflow

    • Chemical epididymitis can occur when urine flows backward from the urethra into the edididymis. This condition can result from straining or heavy lifting.

    Fungal Infection

    • Epididymitis may develop from a fungal infection in the urinary tract, prostate or other area in close proximity to the testicles.

    Prostate Enlargement

    • Men with an enlarged prostate have a greater risk of developing epididymitis.

    Symptoms

    • Epididymitis may cause a tender, warm or red scrotum, testicular pain and pain during urination. Men with this disease may experience pain during sexual intercourse.
