Who Was the Founder of Snickers?

Frank Mars, founder of Mars, Inc., introduced the Snickers bar in 1930. It was originally sold for five cents. More than 75 years later, Snickers is the number one candy bar in the world.

Invention

Frank Mars created the first Snickers bar by adding a chocolate coating to a caramel, peanut and nougat candy that was already on the market.

Name

According to nationwide.com, Mars named the candy bar after a favorite family horse called Snickers.

British Version

In Great Britain only, the Snickers bar was originally known as Marathon, according to Mars.com. The name was changed to Snickers in 1990.

Production

Mars uses 99 tons of peanuts to manufacture 15 million Snickers bars every day. The lines on the bottom of a Snickers bar are transferred from the belt as the candy bar cools. Each pattern is unique.

Popularity

More than $2 billion worth of Snickers bars are sold each year, making it the most popular candy bar in the world.

Fun Fact

In 2007 Mars, Inc. created a special edition Snickers bar for the second Shrek sequel--the nougat was dyed green.
