Etiquette for a Tuxedo With a Bow Tie & Vest

Etiquette for a Tuxedo With a Bow Tie & Vest thumbnail
Bow ties and vests are a classic tuxedo combination---no frills necessary.

With varying cuts, styles, cuff links, number of buttons, collars and more, tuxedos can be a confusing business. Knowing the proper protocol is the first step to dressing smart, though, especially when it comes to the accessories. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Bow Ties

    • Bow ties are a classy, elegant addition to a tuxedo, and just as acceptable as a necktie. In fact, some would argue that a bow tie is the safer bet, whether in a formal, informal, traditional or contemporary setting.

    Vests

    • If you don't like to wear a vest, replacing it with a cummerbund is acceptable. Only do this with a bow tie, though---neckties need vests to keep them from dangling loose.

    Tuxedo Wedding Etiquette

    • Unless the invitation indicates a "black tie" affair, don't wear a tuxedo to a wedding---unless, of course, you are a member of the bridal party. It is proper etiquette for fathers and grandfathers to wear them, but the strictness of that rule varies by family.

    Colors

    • Formal, traditional tuxedos include a pearl gray vest. For contemporary outfits, it is suggested that only the bow tie and vest match.

    Evening Wear

    • For events after 6 p.m., you have other options, as well. For a traditional event, try either an all-white or all-black tie and vest combination.
