Reishi Mushroom Treatments for Canines

Reishi mushrooms have been used for more than 4,000 years in traditional Chinese medicine. Reishi mushrooms may also go by the name of mannetake, which is Japanese for "10,000-year-old mushroom." Today, new uses for reishi mushrooms are being discovered, even in veterinary medicine.

      • Reishi mushrooms are native to China, North America and Japan. They are available in six different colors including red, blue, yellow, white, black and purple.

      Uses in Canines

      • In dogs, reishi mushrooms are used to treat various conditions such as arrhythmia, high blood pressure, dizziness, allergies, insomnia, nervousness, ulcers, bronchial inflammations and to stimulate the immune system. They can also be beneficial in relieving pain and improving liver and heart function.

      How it Works

      • Reishi mushrooms work to stimulate the immune system. By doing so, they restrict and prevent the growth of cancer cells.

      Dosage

      • R.M. Clemmons, a veterinarian and assistant professor of veterinary neurology and neurosurgery at the University of Florida, recommends approximately one-fourth the human dosage for small breeds, half the dosage for medium dogs and a full dosage in large breeds.

      Toxicity

      • Currently, these mushrooms are not known to have any toxic side effects. However, before giving any herbal remedy to a dog, the owner should consult their veterinarian for exact dosages and frequency of dosage.
