What Are Dog Chew Bones Made Of?

Chew bones can save your furniture and give your dog hours of entertainment.

Dogs love to chew, but steak bones and chicken bones are dangerous objects that should be disposed of in the trash, not given to your dog. There are specially made, safe chew bones for dogs that come in many varieties. Some are made from natural animal byproducts; others are synthetic.

  1. Nylabones

    • Like their name implies, these chew bones are made of synthetic nylon materials, so they are easy to clean and are long lasting. The small ridges on the surface of the Nylabone help clean your dog's teeth when chewed.

    Hard Bones

    • Hard, hollow animal bones that have been sterilized are safe chew toys because they will not fragment or splinter, so you need not worry about your dog choking or having bone fragments lodge in its throat. For a delicious dog treat, try spreading peanut butter in the center of the hollow bone.

    Rawhide Bones

    • Rawhide chews are made from processed beef hides. Dog owners should only buy rawhide bones made in the United States, as the production of rawhide bones in countries outside the United States is not regulated, so imported chew bones may contain chemicals including formaldehyde and arsenic.

    Bully Sticks

    • Rawhide bones can upset the stomachs of young puppies. A safer alternative is a bully stick, a dried bull penis that can last up to six months, despite excessive chewing by your puppy.

    Pigs' Ears

    • Like rawhide bones, these chew toys are also made of animal byproducts. Pigs' ears should be given in moderation, as they have been known to cause upset stomachs in some dogs. The meat-flavored ones can also stain carpeting.
