The main difference between hydrocodone and hydrocodone APAP is a compositional difference: hydrocodone APAP has acetaminophen added to it.

  1. Hydrocodone

    • Hydrocodone is simply a prescribed chemical synthetically derived from the opium poppy.

    Hydrocodone APAP

    • Hyrdocodone APAP is the generic version of Vicodin. Hydrocodone APAP contains both hydrocodone and acetaminophen (Tylenol).

    • Hydrocodone is rarely prescribed by itself. Instead, it is most often combined with other medicines such as acetaminophen (APAP). Hydrocodone APAP is better for pain management because it is boosts and lengthens the analgesic effects.

    Other Uses

    • Hydrocodone APAP is commonly prescribed to treat mild to moderate pain, especially after surgery or mild physical trauma. Both hydrocodone and hydrocodone APAP can be used to help treat coughing and or fever.

    Doses and Strengths

    • Hydrocodone and hydrocodone APAP come in varying doses. The dose of acetaminophen in the APAP prescription may vary from 350 to 650 mg while the dose of hydrocodone may vary from five to 15 mg. Both are usually taken two to four times a day.
