Garden Edging Information
Garden edging helps define the edges of a garden and gives it a more polished appearance. Edging comes in many types and in different price ranges to help create the best look for your garden and yard. Does this Spark an idea?
-
Purpose
-
Garden edging has three main purposes: provide the garden with aesthetic appeal, assist in defining the edges for mowing the lawn, and provide a barrier so grass does not grow into the garden.
Flexible Edging
-
For a garden with curves, flexible aluminum, steel or plastic edging works well. These types of edging run about 4 inches deep and use below-ground installation so the top edge stays flush with the soil level. They provide a good root barrier between the lawn and garden.

Wood Edging
-
Raised garden beds often use wood as an edging material. Rot-resistant, basic 2-inch thick lumber helps provide the garden with a clean, straight edge.
Stone Edging
-
Stone edging can consist of bricks, cement, stacked flagstones or natural rocks. When partially or fully set into the ground, this material helps provide a root barrier and serves as an attractive above-ground edge to the garden.
Considerations
-
Flush-to-the-ground garden edging makes it easier to mow all the way to the edge of the lawn without having to go back and trim the edges.
