Definitions of Lean Six Sigma Belts
When we think of belts, we usually think of a strap buckled around the waist. But in six sigma terms, it defines an expertise level, with each "belt level" assigned a color. The colors, similar to those used by karate fighters, are yellow, green and black, with the highest level called a "master black belt."

Six Sigma Function
-
Used to improve quality and process, six sigma methodology is a popular step-by-step technique applied in both product and service industries, and is designed to achieve near-perfect results. The process is employed by project managers who plan, implement and measure results until goals are met. Once the improved and sustainable process is in place, the project is considered complete.
Yellow Belt
-
This level is generally the lowest in the hierarchy, but holders often are closest to the project details and occupy a key role on the project team. They usually observe and ascertain that project details are completed in a timely manner.
-
Green Belt
-
Six sigma managers who handle more intense projects are designated as green belts. They are responsible for data collection and analysis.
Black Belt
-
Black belts lead the largest projects, often solving major production and service problems for large corporations. Their team may include one or more lower level six sigma manager(s).
Master Black Belt
-
The major function of a master black belt is teaching. They train, measure and observe six sigma managers, and also act as a consultant for six sigma projects.
Certification
-
The top three belt levels must be certified, but there is no central designated board that oversees the process. Online courses and individual companies may have training and certification programs.
