What Is an SFX File?
An SFX file is a self-extracting executable file. When opened, SFX files automatically extract and decompress the files they contain without the user having to have a utility such as WinZip or IZarc. SFX files are also called "installation files" and "setup files."
-
Function
-
Programmers create SFX files to facilitate the delivery of their programs as one file. This reduces the file size and the download time.
Features
-
SFX files are archives with program code appended to them--this code extracts the archive when you open the file. SFX files often allow users to choose the folders in which to extract the files they contain.
-
Significance
-
Archives contain one or more files that are compressed to take up less space (about 1/3 to 1/2 the original file size).
Programs
-
SFX files can be created, opened and altered with programs such as WinZip, IZarc, and IExpress (Windows XP). To activate IExpress, click on "Start" and "Run," then type "IExpress," then "Run"; follow the instructions.
Fact
-
ZIP files can be converted to self-extracting files--the EXE replaces the ZIP extension. MSI files are self-extracting files for the Microsoft Installer.
Other Uses
-
SFX files are also SoundFX files for the Amiga Forever program.
