Among the many topical flea medications available for dogs and cats, Revolution is unique in that it treats many other parasites in addition to fleas and ticks.

Drug Information

Revolution (selamectin) is an FDA-approved topical medication that provides broad-spectrum prevention against many internal and external parasites. It is available for dogs and cats and only with a prescription from a veterinarian.

Indications

Revolution controls flea infestations in dogs and cats by killing adult fleas as well as preventing flea eggs from hatching. It also treats and prevents hookworms and roundworms in cats and prevents heartworms in both species. Revolution treats and controls mites that cause sarcoptic mange in dogs as well as ear mites in cats and dogs. Finally, Revolution is an effective prevention against the American dog tick.

Dosage

Packaged in individual-use tubes, Revolution is applied monthly in front of the shoulder blades for dogs and puppies 6 weeks or older, and at the base of the neck for cats and kittens 8 weeks or older.

Side Effects

In both clinical trials and safety studies, Pfizer reports that less than 1 percent of cats and dogs showed signs of digestive upset. Additionally, about 1 percent of cats lost hair temporarily at the site of application.

Safety

Pfizer recommends against using Revolution in sick or underweight animals.
