Taking the GED

The GED, or General Educational Development test, is a way for people who did not graduate from high school to earn an equivalent credential. It's required for many jobs and for college admission if you don't have a conventional diploma. Eligibility to take the test is determined by certain criteria.

  1. Residency

    • The test is given in every state. You must meet any residency requirements for the state in which you take the test. Fees vary by state as well.

    No Diploma

    • You can take the test if you have not been awarded a traditional high school diploma and have not already taken the test. You can take the test again if you do not pass on your first try.

    No Shortcuts

    • You may not take the test if you are enrolled in an accredited high school. In some states, home schooled students take the GED to prove they've achieved high school level proficiency.

    Age

    • You must be 16 to take the test. In some states, you must be at least 18.

    Special Needs

    • The test is available in formats to accommodate students with special needs. You can take it in Braille or large print, by audio recordings, or in Spanish.
