What Is a Global Assessment Functioning Test?

The Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF) is used to rate psychological, social and occupational functioning on a numerical scale from 1 to 100.

  1. Axis V

    • The GAF is the fifth axis of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) classification system.

    Rating Scale

    • The highest range on the GAF scale, 91 to 100, indicates superior functioning and no presenting problems. Moderate symptoms or difficulty in life functioning are rated 51 to 60 and serious symptoms are rated 41 to 50. Individuals presenting a severe danger to self or others or have attempted a serious suicide are rated at the lowest range 1 to 10.

    Assessment

    • The GAF rating is determined by choosing a numerical number that best describes the individual's severity of symptoms and functioning.

    Results

    • GAF results are used to determine a recommended level of care and eligibility for mental health benefits. The 1 to 30 range advises inpatient care, the 31 to 69 range recommends outpatient therapy and a GAF rating of 70 or above signifies no medical necessity.

    Considerations

    • GAF results are subjective and may vary depending on the clinician's judgment
