What Is Persian Lamb's Wool?

Persian lamb's wool usually refers to the fur of a newborn Karakul sheep. Karakul sheep are also known as Persian Lambs, so the term may also refer to the wool of a Karakul sheep.

  1. Breed

    • Persian lamb's wool comes from Karakul sheep. Karakul is a breed of domestic sheep native to Central Asia.

    Geography

    • In the United States, Karakul sheep are classified as a rare breed. They are raised for their pelts and wool mainly in Afghanistan, Uzbekistan and Namibia.

    Pelts

    • Pelts are harvested within three days of a lamb's birth. Their fleeces at this age retain tight curls and dark coloring and are more highly valued than older sheep's wool.

    Wool

    • Wool from Karakul sheep is often used for felting and carpet-weaving. The wool comes in a variety of natural colors including black, pink-roan, brown and gray.

    Synthetics

    • There are various knitting wools and fabrics available that are designed to replicate the look of Persian lamb's wool.
