USPS Distribution Clerk Job Description

A USPS distribution clerk is an employee of the United States Postal Service responsible for sorting incoming and outgoing mail.

    • Many postal workers, including those commonly referred to as distribution clerks, must take Exam 473, which tests memory, number skills, address recognition skills and other skills critical to the job.

    Physical Demands

    • Postal workers, must be able to stand for long periods of time, lift heavy bags of mail, and be able to operate machinery, such as a forklift.

    Compensation

    • According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average 2008 wage for mail sorters, processors, and machine operators was $50,020.
