Job Description of a Church Secretary
A church secretary works in the administrative office of a church. Her duties are similar to those in other secretarial positions. She usually reports directly to the congregation's pastor or priest.

The church secretary answers phones and takes messages for the clergy and other staff; maintains church records; prepares for weddings, christenings and baptisms; organizes and prints bulletins, mailings and newsletters; and transcribes sermons and other documents.

The church secretary works in an office environment. He operates office equipment like computers, copiers, fax machines and telephones. He has structured procedures to follow, and he usually receives clear direction from the pastor/priest. The pace is generally steady, and the work can be repetitive.

The church secretary needs to be detail-oriented, deadline-aware, persistent, helpful, team-minded and cooperative. She must also show the utmost discretion, since she is privy to private information that must be kept confidential.
Requirements

A church secretary should possess at least a high-school diploma. Courses in secretarial areas, like keyboarding, filing and shorthand, are beneficial. Experience in a similar administrative position is very useful.

The pay of a church secretary will vary depending on the size and location of the church. The Bureau of Labor Statistics found the mean average salary for a secretary to be $29,900 as of May 2008.
