Nose Disorders

A nose disorder is any problem having to do with the nose. If something happens to the nose, it can impair proper breathing. Some examples of nose disorders are nasal polyps, sinusitis, rhinitis, nosebleeds and a deviated septum.

  1. Nasal Polyps

    • Nasal polyps are benign growths that are located inside the nose and can occur on both sides. If they become large enough or numerous polyps appear, it can cause swelling, which could possibly block the airway.

    Sinusitis

    • Sinusitis is simply a sinus infection. It is an irritation and swelling of the sinuses and nasal passages. A sinus infection can cause a headache or pressure in the eyes, nose and cheek area.

    Rhinitis

    • Rhinitis is simply the irritation and swelling of the nose and sinuses caused by allergies. Signs and symptoms include itchy/runny nose, sneezing, nasal congestion, red watery eyes, cough and headaches.

    Nosebleeds

    • Nosebleeds can occur at any time of the day, but most often happen in the mornings. They are put into two categories -- anterior (front of the nose) and posterior (back of the nose). About 90 percent of nosebleeds are anterior bleeds.

Most nosebleeds can be taken care of at home, but if the bleeding is serious enough, it may be necessary to get medical help.

    Deviated septum

    • A deviated septum is when the wall that separates the two nasal cavities shifts out of place. If you have trouble breathing, then a deviated septum could be the problem. A deviated septum can cause one or both nostrils to be blocked, nasal congestion, frequent nosebleeds and frequent sinus infections. Deviated septums are usually caused by nasal trauma.
