Jealousy & Envy Among Adolescents

Feelings of jealousy and envy are common among all human beings. However, jealousy and envy among adolescents can be a trial on their families and fracture their peer groups.

  1. Differences

    • Jealousy can make one feel as if what another person has truly belongs to them. Envy, however, can be seen as admiration of someone, specifically of the advantages they seem to have. Jealousy is an almost entirely negative emotion; envy, because it can be self-motivating, can be positive.

    Among Siblings

    • Siblings may exhibit jealousy toward siblings by expressing that they "deserve" more of one or more things than a sibling. Envy of a talent, ability, or even treatment by parents among siblings may motivate them to improve themselves in some area.

    Among Peer Groups

    • In peer groups, adolescents may fear being replaced in the group hierarchy. Jealousy and envy among peers creates uncertainty and strong emotions in a group.

    Gender Differences

    • Boys are often more physically aggressive when reacting to jealousy or envy. Girls are often more aggressive in a relational way often through gossip.

    Expert Insight

    • Jealous and envy in adolescents may be exhibited as aggression, violence, formation of cliques and social exclusion. The American Psychological Association advises peer mediation, boundaries and support to help reduce jealousy and envy among adolescents.
