Boiler Technician Job Description

Boiler technicians are skilled workers who work with specialized equipment ,including boilers, pumps and compressors. Other employment titles include steam plant operators and boiler operators. Boiler technicians may find work at warehouses, malls and residential buildings.

  1. Duties

    • Boiler technician duties include routine maintenance, such as cleaning boiler equipment. Some technicians record boiler equipment operational data and identify safety hazards such as corroded boiler parts.

    Basic Qualifications

    • The basic qualifications include a high school diploma or general equivalency diploma at minimum. Formal apprenticeships are available with courses in boiler and generator operations.

    Advanced Qualifications

    • Employers may prefer additional education, including vocational school or post-high school coursework. Coursework may include math and science such as chemistry or physics.

    Working Conditions

    • Boiler technicians can work in dirty, dusty environments or clean, well-lit environments such as an electrical room. Other working environments include power plants, mechanical rooms and boiler rooms.

    Salary and Growth Opportunities

    • According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median salary is $49,790.00. Boiler technicians who have completed additional training can become boiler inspectors and boiler team supervisors.
