What Is the Praxis 2?

The Praxis II test is a standardized subject-specific examination produced by Educational Testing Service (ETS) for those who are seeking teaching certification. There are more than 120 different Praxis II tests covering both elementary and secondary education topics and many varying subject areas.

Purpose

The Praxis II test is required by many states and organizations for teacher licensing. It measures each applicant's knowledge of the specific subject and grade levels they wish to teach, along with their understanding of current teaching methods and skills.

Candidates

Generally, the Praxis II tests are required for those who wish to earn a teaching certification, but other school-related professions may also require this exam to be taken. For example, some certification programs for school psychologists require their applicants to pass a Praxis II examination.

Format

Whether your test is multiple choice questions or written response/essay questions will depend on the specific subject area being tested.

Time Frame

Praxis II exams are given either as a two-hour test, a four-hour test, or one or two one-hour tests during Session 1. During Session 2, they are given as a two-hour test or one or two one-hour tests.

Accommodations

The Praxis II tests are only given on paper, unlike the Praxis I test which allows you to choose a paper-based or computer-based test. The Praxis II test is only given in English, but those who are foreign speakers may be eligible to have extra time on the examination.
