Compare Halogen Vs. Xenon Lights

Both halogen and xenon lights have their advantages and disadvantages. Halogen light bulbs are simple incandescent light bulbs with a slight modification: They contain traces of halogen in their fill gas. One of the biggest differences between these light bulbs is that halogen lights, unlike xenon lights, contain no filament.

  1. Light Output

    • According to online retailer XenonLightShid.com, xenon lights offer a greater light output compared with halogen lights. The company claims that xenon lights are three times brighter than halogen lights.

    How They Work

    • Xenon bulbs produce light when a current of electricity is run in an arc pattern between two electrodes. The tungsten filaments in halogen light bulbs are heated up to around 2,000 degrees Celsius, which produces light.

    Durability

    • In terms of durability, xenon light bulbs have the edge on halogen bulbs. This can be attributed to the fact that xenon light bulbs contain no filament. Jarring and vibrations can cause irreversible damage to a light bulb's filament.

    Life Span

    • Xenon light bulbs typically last longer than halogen light bulbs. A xenon light is rated to last for anywhere between 8,000 and 20,000 hours. Halogen lights are rated to last anywhere between 2,000 and 6,000 hours.

    Facts

    • Xenon lights emit white light that contains a slight bluish tint, which can result in clearer visibility. Halogen is used in halogen light bulbs for the purpose of returning evaporated tungsten filament particles back to the filament. This process is known as the "halogen cycle."
