How Long Do Bullfrogs Live?

The average North American bullfrog lives seven to nine years in the wild. In captivity, they generally live longer. The record lifespan for a North American bullfrog is 16 years.

  1. Habitat

    • The lifespan of a bullfrog depends on its habitat. They require a body of water to survive. They generally are found around lakes, ponds, streams, rivers and bogs. They prefer warm still waters.

    Development

    • Bullfrogs are at risk when they emerge from the eggs as tadpoles. They have gills and a tail, which help them survive in the water for two years, before entering the adult stage.

    Diet

    • A nutritious diet increases longevity in bullfrogs. They eat snakes, worms, insects, crustaceans, frogs, tadpoles and eggs.

    Predators

    • Bullfrogs have several predators including herons, turtles, water snakes and raccoons. There is a hunting season for bullfrogs. Their front legs have good commercial value.

    Adaptation

    • Bullfrogs can adapt to changing environmental conditions, especially those produced by people. They can thrive in higher water temperatures than those to which they're normally accustomed.
