How Long Do Bullfrogs Live?

The average North American bullfrog lives seven to nine years in the wild. In captivity, they generally live longer. The record lifespan for a North American bullfrog is 16 years.

Habitat

The lifespan of a bullfrog depends on its habitat. They require a body of water to survive. They generally are found around lakes, ponds, streams, rivers and bogs. They prefer warm still waters.

Development

Bullfrogs are at risk when they emerge from the eggs as tadpoles. They have gills and a tail, which help them survive in the water for two years, before entering the adult stage.

Diet

A nutritious diet increases longevity in bullfrogs. They eat snakes, worms, insects, crustaceans, frogs, tadpoles and eggs.

Predators

Bullfrogs have several predators including herons, turtles, water snakes and raccoons. There is a hunting season for bullfrogs. Their front legs have good commercial value.

Adaptation

Bullfrogs can adapt to changing environmental conditions, especially those produced by people. They can thrive in higher water temperatures than those to which they're normally accustomed.
