What Is a Cattle Prod?

A cattle prod is an electrical device used by people to herd cattle. It works by creating an incomplete electrical circuit, which is completed when it comes into contact with the animal's skin.

Electricity

Not every cattle prod uses electricity. In the past, cattle prods have simply been devices used to poke or prod cattle. It was not until the 1900s that the electric cattle prod came into use.

Ethics

Some organizations, such as PETA, feel that the use of electric cattle prods is unethical. They claim that the prods cause undue harm to the animals in both physical and psychological ways.

How It Works

The shock created by the cattle prod causes the cow to move away from the source of the shock. In this way, people are able to herd cattle more effectively.

Torture

In some cases, cattle prods have been used by people as torture devices. When applied to the skin for an extended period of time, they can cause burns and even scarring. This usage is highly unethical.

Other Prods

Smaller cattle prods also exist, which are designed for use on smaller livestock. The smaller prods help preserve the smaller animals' health, as the larger prods can cause undue harm.
