A car battery is referred to as a Starting, Lighting and Ignition (SLI) type of battery. It starts the engine, stabilizes the vehicle's charging system and provides auxiliary power when the vehicle is idling or the charging system is not operating.

There are many brands of automotive batteries and what brand you buy is dependent on where you get the battery replaced. Some popular brands include DieHard, sold at Sears; Autocraft, sold at Advance Auto Parts; Interstate, sold at Interstate Batteries; and, Everstart, sold at Walmart.

Cost of a car battery varies depending on type of battery needed for the vehicle and its warranty. Expect to pay $50 to $150 for most vehicles. Installation and recycling fees also may apply.

The warranty is essentially the guaranteed lifespan of the battery. Most manufacturers offer a warranty range between 18 months and four years. Interstate's Mega-Tron Plus line has an 85-month warranty.
Battery Life Conservation

You may be able to extend the life of your battery by disconnecting it when your car sits for long periods of time. The water level also can be checked every few months to ensure it is just touching the bottom of the refill cell.
Battery Failure

There are several reasons why a battery may fail prematurely. Leaving the headlights or dome lights on overnight, for example, will cause a deep discharge that commonly contributes to battery failure. Corrosion and not using the battery for more than six months are other common problems that can lead to failure.
Recycling

Battery recycling is typically handled by an automotive service facility. Be careful handling car batteries on your own. Do not place in curbside waste or recycling bins. Many cities have a designated waste site that accepts car batteries. When handling batteries, wear gloves and safety glasses. Place the battery in a secure, water-tight container that will not tip.
