Make your deck steps safe.

In order to use your outdoor deck for entertaining and relaxing in the yard with your family, you need to make certain that your deck steps are safe. Weather conditions and poor construction can make deck steps unsafe. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Foundation

    • Your deck steps should have a foundation of their own either separate from the deck foundation or as a part of the existing foundation. A strong concrete landing pad for your steps will give your steps stability and make their use safer.

    Construction

    • Make sure your anchor screws at the top of your stairs are securely fastened into the frame of the deck. Your deck steps should be at least 12 inches deep and should be no more than 12 inches apart.

    Non-Slip

    • Non-slip strips for deck stairs can be purchased at a home improvement store. Install a strip at the edge, in the middle and at the back of each step for added grip.

    Railing

    • Install a strong railing along at least one side of your deck stairs. The railing should be 3 feet high so that people of all heights can comfortably use it.

    Maintenance

    • Check the construction of your steps at least once a year. Secure any nails or screws that are coming loose, and replace broken boards. Clean your steps regularly to prevent slippery moss or other debris from gathering on them.
