Urban Men's Clothing Styles

The classic urban male---a little of this, a little of that...

Male denizens of the metropolitan landscape vary their day-to-day fashion trends as little as their country or suburban counterparts. "If something works, stick with it" is a traditional male motto when clothing is concerned. Though occasionally fashion can be dictated by a gent's occupation, urban males tend to see clothing as an expression of self. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Hip-Hop

    • Dark or muted colored hoodies, complex graphic T-shirts, baggy jeans and baseball caps continue to reign in the hip-hop urban male scene. Sports jerseys, athletic sneakers and tracksuits are still popular, and leather or puffy jackets are the preference for outerwear.

    Hipster

    • Skinny jeans, a faux-hawk, a decent blazer and a palpable aura of "I don't care" are all requisite for the urban male hipster. Try adding on a 5 o'clock shadow, plaid fedora, an '80s throwback T-shirt and/or thick-rimmed glasses for an added slacker-with-fashion-sense panache.

    The Suits

    • A large population swimming in the sea of urbanity are the bankers, traders, attorneys and ad men whose daily armor is the time-honored suit and tie. Urban men tend to favor the classics---black and gray tones for the two-piece, white for the shirt and monotone colors or conservative designs for the tie. Accents of individuality are somewhat acceptable in the ensemble, as are infrequent bright, full-colored dress shirts.

    Punk/Rebel

    • Punk still lives. Torn jeans, high boots, ratty tees, worn leather and spiky metal accessories continue to thrive in the depths of the urban jungle. A bit higher quality than the past, punk clothing is versatile in that it can be something old or something new, just tear it up or wear it out a bit. Guyliner, a mohawk or shaved head, a knit beanie, tattoos and piercings seal the deal.

    Trends

    • For 2010, "Fashionbeans.com: Men's Fashion Tips and Men's Style Guide" espouses stacking up assorted necklaces and bracelets for men. Other predicted male trends include a surge in drop-crotch jeans and the color turquoise (yes, turquoise) making its urban presence known. Watch for these and other trends to work their way into the standards.
