Pansies As a Houseplant

Pansies are a popular house plant for their bright colors and easy care. They do, however, require some planning if you intend to grow them on your own. Pansies can be purchased in the blooming state at flower nurseries nationwide. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Where to keep them

    • Pansies bloom best in bright sunlight and do not like warm air temperatures. During winter you may grow an indoor pansy in a southern facing window, where there is no heat source below it.

    Warning

    • Keep your pansy well drained, as they are susceptible to mold and other infections if they are kept too moist.

    Time Frame

    • Some people like to plant their pansies in the late fall in order to have leaf growth in the spring.

    Potential

    • There is anecdotal evidence that pansies can overwinter even in exposed rooms, such as porches, as long as temperatures do not get too low. If you live in a cold climate and intend to keep your pansy in an outside porch, you may do better to plant your pansy in the ground in the fall, and cover it over with leaf mulch for protection.

    Theories/ Speculation

    • There is some argument as to whether pansies are perennials or whether they are biennials. The difference is that perennials come up every year, and biennials only show leaves during their first year, and they show their flowers during their second year. Pansies will generally return year after year, if their root systems are protected in the winter. Stems may become longer and less attractive, however, as the years pass.
