Easy Explanation of Sun Sign Synastry in Astrology
Sun sign synastry is the study of how astrological sun signs affect relationships. By comparing the signs, it can predict harmonious or challenging features that the relationship is likely to display.

The Sun in Astrology
-
The date you were born determines your sun sign. There are 12 sun signs roughly corresponding to the 12 months of the year. They are categorized into four elements: air, earth, fire and water and three quadruplicities: cardinal, fixed and mutable.
Harmony and Disharmony
-
The study of astrology has much to do with geometric configurations. Sun signs that are separated by 60 or 120 degrees are said to be in sextile or trine, respectively. These are thought to be harmonious aspects. Signs separated by 90 or 180 degrees are said to be in square or opposition, and are thought to signify challenging circumstances.

Signs of the Same Element
-
Generally speaking, signs of the same element are in a trine aspect relative to each other and signify a harmonious pairing. Examples include Taurus with Virgo (earth), Aquarius with Gemini (air), Scorpio with Pisces (water) and Leo with Sagittarius (fire).
Signs of the Same Quadruplicity
-
Each quadruplicity contains four signs that are in a square aspect relative to each other, forming challenging pairings. Examples include Aries and Cancer (cardinal), Taurus and Leo (fixed) and Gemini and Virgo (mutable).
Venus and Mars
-
While a complete treatment of astrological synestry studies all the planets, relationship astrologers often focus on the positions of Mars and Venus relative to each other and to the Sun in the charts being compared. This is because these two planets traditionally signify love and desire, respectively.
