What Does an Army Engineer Brigade Do?

U.S. Army engineer brigades play an important role in the support of the ground-fighting force. They are the jacks-of-all-trades when it comes to construction, explosives and demolition. They help both to protect their own soldiers and work against the opposing force.

  1. Function

    • Army engineering brigades provide engineering support to combat missions. The brigade does a variety of specialized work dealing with explosives, construction of bridges and other structures and maintenance of various equipment. They also help with security, "field sanitation" and give soldiers help with technical issues.

    Reconnaissance

    • Engineers also take part in reconnaissance missions. These help the brigade know where to establish defensive positions and structures and to gather data for the setting of explosives. Information for the building of roads and tunnels can also be assessed.

    Mines

    • During a mission, engineer brigade soldiers search for and decommission enemy mines. These can range from anti-tank or mines set for soldiers by the opposing force. The engineers also sets mines and other explosive booby traps for the enemy.

    Equipment

    • Engineers use equipment such as bulldozers, tractors and cranes during operations for construction. They are also responsible for the repair and maintenance of these vehicles. Other types of equipment used are mine detectors, hand tools and various power tools.

    Construction

    • The brigade builds bridges and structures that aid in the support of combat operations. Bridges that are built can be permanent or temporary, floating ones. During battle, the engineers also build roads, construct defensive positions and set up barriers against the enemy.
